Trumpeter Woody Shaw as a sideman
WOODY SHAW
Ok, we all know Woody Shaw was a monster trumpet player and composer who made a lot of great music as a leader. But listen to him as a "sideman."
Comments:
"Love it.....Cecil (McBee) is one of my favorite bassists." -- Bert Harris

Comments:
"Woody was great! Saw a filmed concert of him and Dex in Iowa. Great stuff... Dig his playing on Zawinul's first solo album...Doctor Honoros Causa..." -- Theo Stevens
Comments:
"His best album." -- Papa Jazz Record Shoppe
"That's a t'riffic album, Young's version of Monk's Dream was marvelous." -- Asko Astmäe

I also recommend listening to Shaw on Joe Zawinul's "Zawinul" and McCoy Tyner's "Expansions"
COMMENTS:
"I sat quite literally at Woody's feet when this quintet (one of the very best on the planet in that era) played @ jazz de opus that same year, & met him @ kboo when he was here abt 5 yrs. later. i was also a presenter of a concert w/ carter jefferson @ the community music center abt a week before he died." -- James Edwin Olding

Thank you Pete! It's wonderful!!! Great of you to do this! Peace & Light, BRUNI

I can remember about 58 years ago, standing outside of a club on Boston Street in Newark trying to squeeze in to hear this "new" young cat Woody Shaw. A friend standing at the entrance with me commented "Oh man, the Cat mimics Miles note for note. I don't dig him." Now that I think of it, who better to mimic? Man, the Cat could play even at 16 years of age. Times change, and even people. If you get the chance, visit my website at:
www.rickgeesjazzjamm.com. Later, "KEEPING JAZZ ALIVE!" down here in St. Petersburg, Florida.
