Tribute to saxophonist and flutist Sonny Red
It puts a smile on my face when I sift through the ol' vault and discover something I didn't know I had. Last night it was alto saxophonist Sonny Red's "Out of the Blue."
Nice accompaniment, too: Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, Paul Chambers, Roy Brooks and yes, Jimmy Cobb.
Sonny Red was a good but not great altoist who was somewhat lost in the shuffle in the1960s and '70s. He worked in Detroit with Barry Harris (1949-1952), in 1954 temporarily switched to tenor while with Frank Rosolino, and later that year joined Art Blakey briefly.
